Cardinal Alencherry goes hi-tech

Kochi: It is customary for bishops to issue occasional pastoral letters to be read in all parishes under his diocese.
Normally, the parish priest reads those letters either during the homily or at the end of the Mass.
Last Sunday, the Syro Malabar Church (SMC) broke with this tradition when its head Cardinal George Alencherry appeared parish video screens during the Mass to deliver a pastoral letter.
The cardinal is the archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and the archdiocese had circulated CDs of the recorded message to all parishes by Saturday.
SMC spokesperson Fr. Paul Thelakat said the archdiocese opted for this novelty because the message was basically intended for children. “As children give more attention to a televised message, we thought about this,” he added.
The cardinal’s message also stressed the importance of Sunday catechism classes.
He asked priests not to conduct marriages in churches until 12 noon not to distract catechism classes.
