Police in Kerala suspect that a Catholic priest they look for in connection with a rape case might have left the state.
Last Thursday police filed a rape against 40-year-old Father Raju Kokkan, vicar of the St Paul’s at Thaikkattussery of Trichur diocese, following complaints from parents of a 10-year-old girls, the alleged victim.
R Sujithkumar, Ollur sub-inspector, said the police have issued a lookout notice against him who has been missing since Thursday evening. The priest might have left the state, the officer said, according to the New Indian Express.
The incident came to light when the girl revealed the entire episode to her parents on Wednesday.
Thrissur Archdiocese had ousted the priest from the post of the vicar of the St Paul’s Church on Friday and deputed another vicar to perform the religious rites at the church.
The police registered a case against him under Section 376 (1) of the IPC, Section 66 (a) of the IT Act and Section 4 of the Protection of Infants from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, among other provisions in the IPC.
Meanwhile, some people vandalized a shrine in front of the church Friday night, completely shattering its glass.
