Churches into 'businesses'

Pope Francis:

Turning churches into 'businesses' is a scandal

Pope Francis condemned priests and laity who turn their parishes into a “business” by charging for things such as baptisms, blessings and Mass intentions – calling it a scandal that's hard to forgive.

“It is interesting: the people of God can forgive their priests, when they are weak; when they slip on a sin, the people know how to forgive them,” the Pope told mass attendees in the Vatican's Saint Martha guesthouse on Nov. 21.
“But there are two things that the people of God cannot forgive: a priest attached to money and a priest who mistreats people. This they cannot forgive! It is scandalous…”
The Pope centered his homily on the day’s Gospel from Luke in which Jesus turns over tables and drives out those who were selling things inside the temple, saying it is a sacred place meant for prayer and not for business.
While the many people who went to the temple to pray were good and searched for God, they were forced to pay in order to make an offering, the Pope explained, noting that although the temple was a sacred place to these, “there was corruption that scandalized the people.”
He recalled the biblical story of Hannah, the mother of Samuel, who was a humble woman that went to the temple and whispered her prayers in silence, while the priest and his two sons were corrupt and exploited the pilgrims who came.
“I think of how our attitude can scandalize people with unpriestly habits in the Temple: the scandal of doing business, the scandal of worldliness,” the Bishop of Rome said, observing how many parishes have a price list readily available for baptisms, blessings and Mass intentions.
The Pope then recounted the story of a young couple who were a part of a group of college students he led shortly after being ordained. When they decided to get married, they went to their parish to ask for the civil ceremony and Mass together.
When they asked, the couple was told that they couldn’t have the Mass in addition to the ceremony because the time slots for the ceremony were limited to only 20 minutes, the couple needed to pay for two time slots in order to have the Mass as well.
“This is the sin of scandal” the pontiff explained, and alluded to the scripture passage where Jesus tells those who cause scandal that it is “better to be thrown into the sea.”
When those who manage God’s temple and its ministry, including both priests and lay people, become businessmen, “people are scandalized. And we are responsible for this. The laity too! Everyone,” the Roman Pontiff continued.
Preventing scandal is the responsibility is everyone, he said, because if we see this business-mentality going on in our parishes we need to have the courage to say something to the priest.
“It is scandalous when the Temple, the House of God, becomes a place of business, as in the case of that wedding: the church was being rented out.”
Pope Francis noted how when Jesus made his whip and started driving the people out of the temple it was not because he was angry, but rather because he was filled with the wrath of God and zeal for his house.
Jesus, he said, has “an issue with money because redemption is free; it is God’s free gift, He comes to brings us the all-encompassing gratuity of God’s love.”
So when a church or a parish start doing business it’s like saying that salvation is no longer free, the Pope explained, which is why Jesus takes his whip out in order to purify the temple of the corrupt.
He noted how the feast of the day commemorates the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple, saying that Mary enters the temple as a young, simple woman like Hannah, and prayed that she would help keep God’s temple pure.
“May she teach all of us, pastors and those who have pastoral responsibility, to keep the Temple clean, to receive with love those who come, as if each one were the Blessed Virgin.”

Two Kerala Catholics to be declared saints

Nov 22, 2014 at 06:35pm IST

Two Kerala Catholics to be declared saints in Vatican

Vatican City: In a jubilant moment for the Christian community in India, two beatified candidates from Kerala, Fr Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia, will be conferred sainthood by Pope Francis at Vatican on Sunday.
With their canonisation, as the finale of the long-drawn stage-by-stage process is known in Catholic parlance, the centuries-old Syro Malabar Church will have three saints, the first being Sister Alphonsa, raised to the revered rank in 2008.
According to Church sources, the Pope will declare Chavara and Euphrasia as saints during a special mass at St Peter's Square at Vatican on Sunday.
A large number of devotees, two Cardinals and clergy and nuns from Kerala have already left for Vatican to witness the event. Special prayers will also be held in Catholic churches across the state to mark the occasion.
Two places closely associated to the lives of Chavara and Euprhasia, at Mannman in Kottayam and Ollur in Thrissur respectively, have already been in the grip of spiritual fervour for the last several days.
Who is Kuriakose Elias Chavara?
Chavara is reckoned as a social reformer and visionary priest. He as declared blessed in 1986 along with sister Alphonsa, who was made a saint in 2008. He has been credited with introducing reforms in the Syrian Catholic Church. He popularized the Sunday sermon and retreat for laymen; founded the first Indian congregation for men, the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, and for women, the Carmelites of Mother Carmel (CMC).
He started the first printing press at his monastery at Mannanam in Kottayam, which went on to bring out the first Malayalam daily, Nasrani Deepika. His pioneering contribution to society was "School along with Church" - in 1864, he decreed that every church must have a school. The practice continues to this day. Chavara also started a special school for the weaker sections.
Who is Sister Euphrasia?
Lived in the 19th and 20th centuries, and led a life dedicated to prayer and sufferings. She was a member of the Congregation of the Mother Carmel established by Chavara in 1866. She was born in 1877 at Katoor in Thrissur district in a rich family, and was known as Rose before becoming a nun. She joined the CMC and became a nun in 1898, and took the name Euphrasia. She led her life mostly in the convent chapel at Ollur in Thrissur, and was called the praying mother and known as a living saint among the nuns. The frequent letters she wrote to her spiritual father Bishop John Menachery shed light on her life. "There was not a single day in by life not to be afflicted for God," was one of her prayers. She died in 1952 at age 75, and was buried at Ollur. Years later, the tomb of the nun, who prayed for a silent and secluded life, turned to a pilgrim centre. Several miracles were reported from the faithful through heavenly intercession of Euphrasia.
How does one become a saint?
Before a person can be considered for sainthood, he/she must have been dead for at least 5 years. (Pope John Paul II waived this requirement in Mother Teresa's case.)
First step: When the subject arises that a person should be considered for sainthood, a Bishop is placed in charge of the initial investigation of the person's life. If it is determined that the candidate is deemed worthy of further consideration, the Vatican grants a "Nihil Obstat." This is a Latin phrase that means "nothing hinders." Henceforth, the candidate is called a "Servant of God."
Second step: The Church official, a Postulator, who coordinates the process and serves as an advocate, must prove that the candidate lived heroic virtues. This is achieved through the collection of documents and testimonies that are collected and presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. When a candidate is approved, he/she earns the title of "Venerable."
Third step: To be beatified and recognized as a "Blessed," one miracle acquired through the candidate's intercession is required in addition to recognition of heroic virtue (or martyrdom in the case of a martyr).
Fourth step: Canonization requires a second miracle after beatification, though a Pope may waive these requirements. (A miracle is not required prior to a martyr's beatification, but one is required before his/her canonization.) Once this second miracle has been received through the candidate's intercession, the Pope declares the person a "Saint."

Catholic groups protest provisions on property, ‘secret marriage’ in Code of Canon

For more than 20 years, some members of the Catholic Church in Kerala have been protesting against the complete control of the clergy over the administration of the Church’s properties and affairs.
The protests by several Catholic groups have centred on the demand for a Church Act to govern the operations of the Church, much like the Religious Endowments Act or the Wakf Act in other religions. The demand for the legislation received a fillip with the recommendation for a Kerala Christian Church Properties and Institutions Trust Bill by the Kerala Law Reforms Commission, headed by Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, in 2009. A report by the commission sought “to enact legislation to control the ownership and management of all forms of properties movable and immovable owned by the Church, or diocese”.
Various canons, derived from similar sources, govern the operation of the daily affairs of the Church. An example is the Code of Canon of the Eastern Churches written in 1992. The Syro Malabar and the Syro Malankara Churches in Kerala are among the followers of the Code in Kerala. Critics of the Code argue that many of its provisions threaten the integrity of the nation.
“Traditionally, each Church was independent and their administration was handled by elders in the Church. Priests were only spiritual mentors. But this was changed later,” said Joseph Pulikkunnel, director of the Indian Institute of Christian Studies. “The Pope of Rome is now the supreme steward and administrator of the Church. India is an independent State. How can the Pope declare that property of Indian churches is under his control?” says Mr. Pulikkunnel.
M.L. George Maliyeckal, secretary of the central executive committee of the Catholic Laymen’s Association, points out other provisions in the Code of Canon that he feels are against the country’s sovereignty. Mr. Maliyeckal has written the foreword to ‘Swasthi’, the autobiography of a former nun Sister Mary Chandy. In it, he alleges that the Code contains a provision for ‘secret marriage,’ which goes against the country’s laws as it does not have to be revealed to the laity or registered in government records. The provision for secret marriage, detailed in the 840{+t}{+h}canon of the Code, allows a Bishop to keep a marriage secret under special conditions. Mr. Maliyeckal alleges that the provision is against the country’s Constitution.
“The provision is only for very special conditions,” said Fr. Paul Thelakkat, spokesman of the Syro Malabar Church. “If a couple have been married under civil law for many years and want to formalise their union in the Church without the embarrassment of doing it publicly, they can be married under this condition,” says Fr. Thelakkat. He said the secret marriage was not legally valid, but was only a social contract under the Church.
Mr. Maliyeckal, however, alleged in the foreword that the provision was being misused by members of the clergy who wished to have sexual relationships. Fr. Thelakkat said the Church took a strict view of clergymen breaking their vows of celibacy. “If any priest wishes to get married, he will have to leave the clergy,” said Fr. Thelakkat.
Mr. Maliyeckal’s organisation and other faithful, however, are firm in their demand for a law to govern the activities of the Church. “To evade income tax, the Church says that its commercial establishments are for religious and charitable purposes. But when our association questioned some of their expenditures in court, the Church replied that their income was not for charity or religion. There has to be more accountability on these things,” he said.
To evade income tax, the Church says that its commercial establishments are for religious and charitable purposes… There has to be more accountability on those things

Catholic Church to oppose proposed Bills

KOLLAM: Fundamental rights will become the biggest casualty if the State government decides to enact four controversial Bills mooted by the Law Reforms Commission headed by the former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer, said Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman here on Wednesday.
He was releasing the booklet ‘Ma Nishada’ by George F. Xavier.
The booklet seeks to ‘expose’ how some of the proposed Bills tend to be ‘hostile’ to the Catholic tradition, Dr. Roman said. Suitable amendments to existing laws are the imperative need of a society. But ignoring the sentiments of a community in this exercise is sheer injustice, he said.
The four draft Bills are the Kerala Family Wellbeing Bill, the Indian Penal Code (Kerala) Amendment Bill, the Kerala Christian Church Properties and Institution Trust Bill and the Kerala Christian Marriage Bill.
Dr. Roman said the Catholic Church had serious reservations about the Bills because it had a stand on those issues. The Bills can only be seen as part of a wider agenda to tar the church, he alleged, expressing the hope that the government will understand the sentiments of the church and take corrective measures.
It appears that the recommendations have been finalised by the commission on the basis of interviews with some disgruntled elements who are inimical to the church, the bishop said. He alleged that there was a political agenda behind the Bills. The clergy and the laity will stand together to oppose it.
The bishop said that as part of the church’s protest, the Kollam diocese would organise a protest rally and a public meeting here on March 30.

KOCHI: The 100th birthday of Justice V R Krishna Iyer, one of the stalwarts of the Indian judiciary, will be celebrated in November this year.  At a press conference here on Saturday, members of the Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement said that discussions were on to bring prominent national leaders to take part in the celebration.
The Krishna Iyer Movement, which has been formed to fight for social causes, has demanded that the government take steps to upgrade the cancer centre, for which foundation stone will be laid on Monday, to international standards. Justice Krishna Iyer stressed the need for the Chief Minister and the MPs to stand together in the pursuit, and ensure that talks are held with the Prime Minister.  Dr Sanil Kumar, a member of the Movement, demanded that the government take immediate steps to appoint sufficient staff at the Kalamassery Medical College, which was taken over by the government recently.
Though the government has taken over the hospital no measures have been taken to improve the basic facilities at the hospital.
“The government has not taken any step to make appointments to the super-speciality cadre at the hospital. Persons who are nearing their retirement age, and those without proper qualifications have been appointed at the top posts at the hospital,” Sanil Kumar alleged. The members said that a strict criteria should be set for the appointment of doctors and the other staff at medical colleges.
Writer M K Sanu and Ernakulam Karayogam secretary P Ramachandran also spoke to the media.

Complaint against Ollur Church Vicar

Complaint against Ollur Church Vicar

Following a complaint registered by my Dad, Magistrate has ordered to file a case against our church priest and trustees of church for conducting fireworks during banned hours. You can read the details about the case in the following article published by Times of India on 30th October on the 5th page.
The case has the potential to become a trend setter in taking action against temple and church authorities who conduct fireworks violating all the rules. There are already verdicts from Supreme court which restricts the quantity and timing of fireworks.
I am sharing this not to defame church or the priest. The church is misrepresenting the facts and making provocative speeches to its believers during holy masses to instigate feelings against our family. Now there are frequent processions to our house by believers.Unlike the church we don't have a platform to defend our side. I am sharing this news because almost 4000 families in our locality are misguided. Only my parents are in my hometown and I am worried about their security. Church made the believers think that, this is a false allegation.
To all my friends who asked what exactly happened during fireworks, These are the facts

-----------------------------------------
For the past 3 years, we have been telling the church authorities to reduce the quantity of fireworks. Every year they promise to reduce the fireworks, and we give our consent. Once they get the consent, they use tonnes of fireworks, which is obviously illegal. Only because of the repeated denial of justice to us, we decided to take the matter outside church authorities and move legally.

Still we din't do anything legal to stop fireworks this time. We only asked to reduce the power and do it within legal limits. Our house is less than 20 meters from the firework area. Tonnes of fireworks are used there without proper license and without respecting the verdict of Supreme court.

As a repercussion, this year, the fireworks were held as usual but with more strength. After the regular fireworks, there were additional high powerful "kathanavedi". By that time a part of our compound wall fell down and few cracks appeared on our house.

We called the police SI at that instant itself(midnight 1.30) and he told that he will take action against this. The SI itself is the witness and many of my friends and relatives were at our house since it was church feast. But due to pressure from higher officials( no fault of the SI), he could not file an FIR. So we filed a complaint and the magistrate asked Police to file case against priest and church trustees.
As far as I know there are many houses which are weaker than our house around the firework area. But since its against church no one is ready to complain. There is a hospital which is 100 meters away from fireworks area which is run by church itself.
We have society pressure and peer pressure to withdraw the case since a priest is involved in this. Along with that the usual church gimmicks like alienating us within the community.
Tagging a few people who were at my house during the incident

Citizens can write letters to me; says Modi

New Delhi: Now on, citizens who are not able to access internet and social media can write letters directly to Prime Minister Modi. Modi himself said this stating that citizens can offer suggestions related to various issues. He was addressing the nation in his second ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address. He said that he had been told that many people don’t have access to e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites.
“Citizens who have suggestions related to ‘Mann Ki Baat’ and want to write to me can write letters at Mann Ki Baat, Akashwani, Sansad Marg, New Delhi. The letters will reach me,” Modi said.
“All such letters will be considered seriously as they are proof people are concerned about issues related to the country,” he added.
