Cardinal Cleemis demands ban on 'Agnes of God'

New Delhi: Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, has demanded a ban on the play ‘Agnes of God’ saying it hurts the religious sentiments of millions of Christians in the country. 

The content of the play "misinterprets the religious belief of the Christian Community and wrongly portrays character" of thousands of the clergy "who are committed to a life of celibacy," he said in a letter addressed to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The play, directed by Mumbai born Kaizaad Kotwal, is an adaptation of a 1982 Broadway production written by American playwright and screenwriter John Pielmeier.

The original work, reportedly based on a true incident in the US, tells the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the child was the result of a virgin conception. Investigations by a psychiatrist lead to a clash with the mother superior of the convent but establish sexual relations. The title is a pun on the Latin phrase Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).

The drama was scheduled for Oct. 4 staging in a Mumabi auditorium but the authorities of the auditorium reportedly cancelled the show following protests from a city-based organization, Catholic Secular Forum.

Cardinal Cleemis said the drama is "a mockery of lakhs of Religious Sisters who are working selflessly with dedication and generosity" and the play "will deeply hurt the sentiments of Christians, who are always made easy targets, for no fear of retaliation and taken for granted for their peace loving nature.

"Cardinal Cleemis in the letter stressed that Christian community is "against any form of art and media that target the clergy and Religious men and women of any Religion, as we believe that Indian culture respects all faith and religions," said a press release issued by Father Joseph Chinnayyan, the deputy secretary general of CBCI.

Cardinal Cleemis wanted Singh to instruct chief ministers of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala, where this play may be staged at different times, to ban this play.

The senior Church leader said a danger in allowing the play is that "it will be an encouragement for such vicious minds to come out with similar plays, based on other religions, and the reaction need not be always peaceful and tolerant, leading to destroying the religious harmony.

"The cardinal has written a similar letter to Minister for Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley," said the release from Father Chinnayyan.

New Delhi: A prominent Hindu group in India has asked Pope Francis to apologize to Indians who have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of Christian missionaries in the country.

The joint general secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or world Hindu council, Surendra Jain, said Christian missionaries have sexually abused children in India and Pope Francis should apologize to the victims, reported the mass circulation Hindi daily Navbharat Times.

Jain was responding to the news of the pope's Sept. 27 meeting in Philadelphia with survivors of clergy sexual abuse.

In the 30-minute meeting with three women and two men, the pope said, "It is engraved in my heart, the stories, suffering and pain of the children abused by priests."

"I continue to feel an overwhelming sense of embarrassment because of those who had in their care the little ones and caused them great harm. I am deeply sorry. God cries," the pope reportedly said.

Jain told ucanews.com that Christian missionaries have been involved in such acts around the globe and the pope is offering an apology because there is pressure on him from the U.S. and other western nations.

In India too, "Christian missionaries have been involved in damaging temples and sexual abuse," Jain said.

"The pope has to apologize to Indians who are the victims of sexual abuse by the Christian missionaries," he told ucanews.com.

Jain said that there are "plenty of cases of sexual abuse of children and women by the Christian priests in the states of Karnataka, Odisha and Jharkhand."

"These cases do not make it to the national media. They are mostly reported in the regional local dailies of that particular region," Jain said.

Christian society in India is "not enlightened as in the West. Indians do not always come out and report if a person from the family becomes victims of sexual abuse by clergy," he added.

Father Gyanprakash Topno, spokesman for the bishops' conference declined to comment, saying he was not aware of Jain's demand. "We will respond, if necessary, after having seen the full text of the said demand," he added.

               ആലുവ സെന്റ് ഡൊമനിക് ഫൊറോന പള്ളി ഇടവകാംഗമായ പാറായി താണ്ടമ്മ ജോര്‍ജ്ജ് തരകന്റെ പേരകുട്ടിയുടെ ആദ്യകര്‍ബ്ബാന സ്വീകരണത്തിന് ആവശ്യമായ പള്ളിക്കുറി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് ഇടവക വികാരിയായ ഫാ. ജോണ്‍ തെക്കനെ ശ്രീമതി താണ്ടമ്മ ജോര്‍ജ്ജ് തരകന്‍ നേരിട്ട് സമീപിച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ അവരുടെ പേരില്‍ പള്ളിക്കണക്കില്‍ അവരുടെ സമ്മതമില്ലാതെ എഴുതി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപയില്‍ അവര്‍ മുമ്പ് കൊടുത്ത എഴുപത്തയ്യായിരം രൂപ കഴിച്ച് ബാക്കിയുണ്ട് എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഇരുപത്തയ്യായിരം രൂപ വികാരി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. അതിന് വിസമ്മതം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട പള്ളിക്കുറി കൊടുക്കാതെ മടക്കി അയച്ചു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം അവരുടെ ബന്ധുവായ ശ്രീ. ബ്രൈറ്റ് വികാരിയെ സമീപിച്ച് മേല്‍പറഞ്ഞ കുറി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ഇരുപത്തയ്യായിരം രൂപ കൊടുക്കാതെ ആദ്യകുര്‍ബ്ബാന സ്വീകരണത്തിന് ആവശ്യമായ പള്ളിക്കുറി നല്‍കാന്‍ സാധ്യമല്ലെന്ന് ഫാ. ജോണ്‍ തെക്കന്‍ ശഠിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

               ശ്രീമതി താണ്ടമ്മ ജോര്‍ജ്ജ് തരകന്റെ അനുമതിയില്ലാതെ എഴുതി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കണക്കില്‍, മുമ്പ് ചെക്കായി 50,000 രൂപയും, റൊക്കം പണമായി 25,000 രൂപയും കൊടുത്ത് അവര്‍ സഹകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് (25,000 രൂപയുടെ ചെക്ക് തിരികെ കൊടുത്ത് റൊക്കം പണമായി വികാരി കൈപറ്റുകയായിരുന്നു). ശ്രീമതി താണ്ടമ്മ ജോര്‍ജ്ജ് തരകന്റെ മകന്‍ മാത്യു ജോലിചെയ്യുന്നതും, കുടുംബമായി താമസിക്കുന്നതും ദുബൈലാണ്. കുട്ടികള്‍ അവിടെയാണ് പഠിക്കുന്നത്. പേരകുട്ടിയായ റയണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ 8 വയസ്സ്  ആയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കുട്ടിയുടെ ആദ്യകുര്‍ബ്ബാന സ്വീകരണം ദുബൈയില്‍വെച്ച് നടത്താനാണ് മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ആവശ്യത്തിലേക്ക് സ്വന്തം ഇടവകയില്‍ നിന്നും പള്ളിക്കുറി ആവശ്യമായതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഇടവക വികാരിയെ സമീപിക്കാന്‍ ഇടയായത്.

               കൂദാശപരമായ ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കു വേണ്ടി  ഇടവക വികാരിയെ സമീപിക്കുന്നവര്‍ പലതരത്തിലുള്ള ചൂഷണങ്ങള്‍ക്കും, അവഹേളനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും  വിധേയരാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്ന് പൊതുവെ പരാതിയുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ശ്രീമതി പാറായി താണ്ടമ്മ ജോര്‍ജ്ജ് തരകന്റെ അപേക്ഷയില്‍ അതിരൂപതയുടെ സത്വര ശ്രദ്ധ പതിയണമെന്നും, അവരുടെ അപേക്ഷ പരിഗണിച്ച് സഹകരിക്കണമെന്നും വിനയപൂര്‍വ്വം താല്‍പര്യപ്പെട്ടുകൊള്ളുന്നു.

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: ജനാധിപത്യത്തില്‍ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തി വളരെ പ്രാധാന്യം അര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നതാണെന്ന് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്ര മോദി. റേഡിയോ പരിപാടിയായ 'മന്‍ കി ബാത്തി'ലൂടെ ജനങ്ങളെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. മന്‍ കി ബാത്തിലൂടെ ജനങ്ങളെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് ഒരു വര്‍ഷം പൂര്‍ത്തിയായി. നിരവധി കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ജനങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും പഠിക്കാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു. കത്തുകളിലൂടെയും മറ്റും നിരവധി ആളുകളുടെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങള്‍ അറിഞ്ഞു. ഇതില്‍ പലതും പ്രാവര്‍ത്തികമാക്കാന്‍ കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതായും മോദി പറഞ്ഞു.

നേതാജി സുഭാഷ് ചന്ദ്രബോസിന്‍െറ വിവിധ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലുള്ള 50 കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങളുമായി ഒക്ടോബറില്‍ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടത്തും. നേതാജിയുടെ ബന്ധുക്കളെ ഒൗദ്യോഗിക വസതിയിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൊല്‍ക്കത്തയിലുള്ള ബന്ധുക്കളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും വളരെ സന്തോഷത്തോടെയാണ് ഇക്കാര്യം ജനങ്ങളുമായി പങ്കുവെക്കുന്നതെന്നും മന്‍ കി ബാത്തിലൂടെ മോദി അറിയിച്ചു.

പാവപ്പെട്ട നിരവധി കുടുംബങ്ങള്‍ ഗ്യാസ് സബ്സിഡി വേണ്ടെന്നു വച്ചു. ഇതും നിശബ്ദ വിപ്ളവമാണ്. ടെലിഫോണിലൂടെ ആളുകളെ ബന്ധപ്പെടുക വഴി വ്യത്യസ്തമായ കാര്യം ചെയ്യാനാണ് താന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചത്. 55,000 ഫോണ്‍ കോളുകളാണ് ലഭിച്ചതെന്നും മോദി വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ യുവാക്കള്‍ വോട്ട് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തണമെന്നും സമൂഹത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തിയെയാണ് 'മന്‍ കി ബാത്' ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നതെന്നും മോദി വ്യക്തമാക്കി.
